When I managed to charge headlong into a multi-person melee and slay each of them without so much as breaking stride, it felt like being an 18-wheeler with the lithe grace of a ballerina. ![]() Those blink-and-you're-dead battles are Showdown Effect's most satisfying moments. Levels are relatively spacious, but actual, you know, showdowns are never far away. Movement and combat frantically skip together hand-in-hand, keeping the proceedings gloriously fleet-footed. And that's key, because standing still in The Showdown Effect is very much akin to doing the same thing in the middle of a busy intersection. Don't get me wrong: while not exactly thematically rich, each area is molded – practically greased – to encourage maximum forward motion. ![]() ![]() Settings look suitably cartoony and vibrant, from cyberpunk cityscapes to medieval fortresses to. Levels, too, (all four of them) contain numerous chuckle-worthy winks and nods – some itsy bitsy references and others, well, hi there, Godzilla. A match composed entirely of eight Arnold Schwarzenegger soundalikes isn't so much likely as it is downright inevitable. Each colorful character is a thinly veiled parody of some blockbuster mega-star or another rendered in a cool illustrative style, but there just aren't many to choose from right now. Play This multiplayer-only brawler's main claim to fame is a sly elbow between the ribs of just about every action movie cliché imaginable, and there's some strong humor sprinkled throughout. ![]()
